An offer from Teaching and Learning in Higher Education in cooperation with the Language Center of the UOL
This course aims to prepare instructors who are new to using the English language to teach academic subjects for the demands of the English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) classroom. Participants will be introduced to characteristics of EMI in German higher education, as well as practice the language needed to successfully navigate challenging communicative situations with regards to teaching and interactions with students. Observing and analyzing EMI teaching, identifying best practices in EMI, and simulating teaching situations in English will be additional foci of the course.
Contents:
- The EMI classroom(characteristics of EMI, participants, challenges
- Language for Lectures(different lecture styles, introducing & ending a lecture, signposting, coherence and cohesion)
- Language for Seminars and Practical Sessions(structuring seminars/sessions, giving guidance, using questions to guide learning, answering students’ questions, setting up groups and tasks, explaining procedures, setting goals and expectations, ending group discussions/tasks)
- Language For Feedback(advising students on strengths and weaknesses, giving constructive and targeted feedback, organizing feedback, politeness)
- Observation of EMI teaching(observing an instructor (ideally from one’s field) and analyze their EMI teaching)
- Identifying best practices in EMI(discussion of teaching observation, does & don’ts in EMI)
- Simulation of EMI teaching(participants prepare and present a small EMI lesson)

Scope:
Teaching in English - Essentials consists of 20 units of work (1 unit = 45 minutes). The offer can be recognized for the Certificate Program “Teaching and Learning in Higher Education” (module 3.3). Participation will be certified.

The number of participants in the offer is limited to 12. A registration is required.

About the trainer:
Tim Dittmann is the Coordinator of the English Language Section at the Language Center of the UOL with more than decade of experience teaching Academic and Scientific English at German universities. Having grown up bilingually (German-English), Tim is passionate about developing learner’s language abilities for successful use in higher education. Tim holds a Master’s degree (M.A.) in Political Science, English/American Studies: Cultural Studies, and Modern & Contemporary History (FAU Erlangen), a PGCert in Teaching English for Academic Purposes (University of Leicester) and is a certified English Language Coach (ELC).
