Funktionelle Bedeutung von Horizontalzellen

Horizontalzellen erhalten exzitatorische synaptische Eingangssignale von den retinalen Photorezeptoren und sorgen für eine hemmende Rückkopplung auf Photorezeptoren und eine Inhibition von Bipolarzellen. Horizontalzellen sind untereinander intensiv über elektrische Synapsen gekoppelt und sind deshalb in der Lage, die Photorezeptor-Aktivität über eine ausgedehnte Fläche zu integrieren. Daher vermutet man, dass sie zur antagonistischen Struktur der rezeptiven Felder von Bipolar- und Ganglienzellen beitragen und die synaptische Übertragung von Photorezeptoren auf Bipolarzellen an die aktuellen Lichtverhältnisse anpassen. Da das Ausmaß ihrer Beteiligung am Zustandekommen der retinalen Ausgangssignale allerdings noch unklar ist versuchen wir mit Hilfe transgener Modelle die funktionelle Bedeutung dieser Interneurone für die retinale Informationsverarbeitung zu beleuchten.
