PhD 6-1

The working group Theoretical Physics / Complex Systems of the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg offers a

PhD position for 3 years
(TV-L E13 (75%))

in the framework of a Joint Research Group "Spatial community ecology in highly dynamic landscapes: from island biogeography to metaecosystems (DynaCom)". Starting date is January, 1st, 2019.

The aim of the studies related to this position concerns the investigation of the passive dispersal of organisms and seeds mediated by hydrodynamic flows in different landscapes of islands on different spatial scales. Organisms and seeds are treated either as point tracer particles or as inertial particles possessing a particular size. Hydrodynamic flows mediating the transport between islands are either simple analytical flow fields or ocean flows provided by oceanographers. The impact of the properties of the flow (speed, vortices, fronts) as well as of the particles (size, life time of organisms/seeds) on the distribution of organisms/seeds in different island landscapes shall be investigated.

Applicants must hold an academic university degree (master or equivalent) in environmental modeling, theoretical physics or mathematics including mathematical biology. Experience in nonlinear dynamics, hydrodynamics, mathematical modelling in ecology is highly appreciated. Knowledge in computer programming is necessary. A strong interest in research is expected. It is further expected to collaborate intensively with scientists from other disciplines such as biology and ecology within the research group.

The Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg is dedicated to increasing the percentage of female employees in the field of science and encourages applications from female candidates.
Applicants with disabilities will be employed preferentially if equally qualified.

Applications should be submitted by e-mail till September 30, 2018 and should contain a CV, a motivation letter, copies of the most important certificates and the name and contact details of at least one person who is willing to give a reference. All has to be sent as a single pdf-file to the contact person Prof. Dr. Ulrike Feudel ( mentioned below.
