The Biochemistry group at the University Oldenburg (Department of Neuroscience) offers a

for three years in the research project "Diversity of calcium sensor signaling in zebrafish rod and cone photoreceptors funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The position is supposed to start in April 2022 and should lead to a successful dissertation.
The overall aim of the project is to understand the deactivation mechanisms in the rod and cone photoreceptors in the zebrafish retina. Deactivation involves specific G protein-coupled receptor kinases (GRKs) phosphorylating illuminated visual opsins. These processes are under control of calcium sensor proteins like recoverin. Main objectives of the present project are to identify unknown interaction partners of GRK and recoverin variants using different screening approaches. We will also test the hypothesis, whether a non-visual opsin interacts with a GRK variant. A further aim of the project is to relate zebrafish GRK activities to the eight different opsin substrates using a fluorescence based reporter assay.
From a successful candidate we expect an above-average academic university degree (Master or equivalent) in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related subjects and a strong interest in basic research in a collaborative research environment. We require very good mastering of English reading and writing. Basic knowledge of the German language is helpful in daily life, but is not a criterion for being accepted or not.
Our group is located at the University Oldenburg, Germany, and is part of several collaborative centres of excellence including the Research Training Group (RTG) "Molecular Basis of Sensory Biology" and the Collaborative Research Center SFB1372 "Magnetoreception and navigation in vertebrates: from biophysics to brain and behaviour".
