Stellenausschreibung / Job advertisement

The Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) at the University of Oldenburg invites applications for a

Doctoral researcher (m/f/d)

Research area: marine biogeochemical modelling

salary according to E13 TV-L, 75%

starting September 2022 for a period of 3 years

Application deadline: 25 July 2022

The ICBM is an interdisciplinary research institute, for fundamental and applied marine research. The internationally renowned institute aims at understanding the function of marine environmental systems through close cooperation of the various scientific disciplines (chemistry, biology, physics, mathematical modeling) of its more than 20 research groups.

The position focuses on numerical modelling of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the ocean, a large marine carbon inventory with implications for the marine carbon cycle and the climate system, and its interactions with diverse microbial communities. Mechanisms behind its longevity and fate in a future climate are poorly understood. Your task will be to model microbial DOM interactions in spatially explicit networks, building on novel approaches developed in the group. DOM related processes are currently underrepresented in global modelling efforts. The aim is to identify underlying processes that shape these interactions and control DOM turnover. The advertised position contributes to the newly established research group in Biogeochemical Ocean Modelling of Prof. Sinikka Lennartz at ICBM. We offer a multidisciplinary working environment, a collaborative working atmosphere and support initiative to develop and pursue own ideas in the broader context of the topic.

  • Qualifying academic university degree (Master or Diploma, not of a University of Applied Sciences) in the natural, mathematical or computer sciences, preferably with an oceanographic or biogeochemical background
  • Fluently spoken and written English.
  • Ability for and enthusiasm to work in a multidisciplinary, international team and to communicate with external partners

Desirable would be:

  • Programming skills in languages such as Python, Matlab and/or Fortran.
  • Knowledge on process-based numerical modelling, network theory, marine microbiology or biogeochemistry are considered advantageous.

The University of Oldenburg is dedicated to increasing the percentage of female employees in the field of science. Therefore, female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. In accordance with Lower Saxony regulations (§ 21 Section 3 NHG) female candidates with equal qualifications will be preferentially considered. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference in case of equal qualification.

Applications, including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, qualifying documents (final academic records), motivation letter (1 page), and the names and contact information of up to three references should be submitted by email in a single PDF to Prof. Dr. Sinikka Lennartz () using subject "Doctor-Biogeochemical Modelling" by 25.07.2022. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Prof. Dr. Sinikka Lennartz for more information about the position.
