The workgroup Organic Geochemistry at the ICBM studies the origin, properties and fate of organic matter in marine ecosystems. Our special interest is devoted to microbial transformations of organic compounds as a crucial element of the biogeochemical carbon cycle. Detailed structural knowledge of the organic compounds involved in these processes is of fundamental importance.

The field of duties in research includes identification and structure elucidation of biogeochemically relevant organic compounds, development and application of methods to trace these compounds in samples from natural marine habitats and participation in the scientific supervision of liquid chromatographic-mass spectrometric equipment including a high resolution tribrid mass spectrometer. Teaching duties include lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical courses and theses supervision in the B.Sc. and M.Sc programs Environmental Sciences and Marine Environmental Sciences, respectively.

Candidates must have a qualifying university degree (master or diploma (not of a University of Applied Sciences)) in chemistry, environmental sciences or geosciences or a related discipline as well as a doctorate with a dissertation on a topic from analytical organic chemistry or molecular organic geochemistry. Experience in chromatography (particularly liquid chromatography), mass spectrometry (including high resolution techniques) and coupling of these techniques is required. We are looking for a highly motivated co-worker with initiative, capacity for teamwork and interest in interdisciplinary research.
