Course Overview

This course illustrates the process of framing your research as a social scientist for a broader audience in the sciences, e.g., the Nature family of journals and cross-disciplinary journals.
The challenges involved are varied, since norms, standards, and requirements in these journals may differ significantly from those in the social sciences, e.g., Economics. For instance, it is necessary to raise the interest of editors of such journals and it is often demanding to communicate one’s research to reviewers working in other areas.
Despite such challenges, pay-offs include learning how to better communicate one’s research, reach- ing a broader audience and, no less important, obtaining wider recognition as a scientist.

Course Objectives

At the end of the workshop, course participants are expected to have gained:
• A perspective of how the publication process in science journals may differ from journals in the social sciences, especially Economics;
• A perspective of how to approach a research project aimed at science journals from the perspective of a social scientist;
• A perspective of common hurdles during the submission process to science journals.

Format and Structure

The course consists of a half-day session combining lectures and class discussion. The cases covered will partly be based on anonymized material such as letters and reports.
Course participants are expected to familiarize themselves with the material made available prior to the course to allow ourselves a more productive discussion. Postdocs are welcome!

About

Cristian Huse is a Professor of Economics at the University of Oldenburg, where he holds the Chair of Applied Microeconomics. He holds a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics (LSE), a MSc in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics, also from the LSE, a MA in Eco- nomics from the Getulio Vargas Foundation, and a BA in Economics from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). His research encompasses Econometrics, Industrial Organization (the empirical study of markets), and Environmental & Energy Economics. He has published in jour- nals within Economics (e.g., Economic Journal, Journal of the Association of Environmental and resource Economists, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Journal of Economics and Management Strategy), in the Sciences (e.g., Nature Energy), and cross-disciplinary journals (e.g., Energy Journal, Energy Policy). He currently teaches courses in Environmental Economics, Econometrics, and Industrial Organization.
