Beschreibung

Basophils are granulocytes and important sources of histamine as well as other pro-inflammatory mediators which contribute to the symptoms associated with allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis, asthma and anaphylactic shock. Recent evidence suggests that basophils, despite their low numbers compared to other immune cells, play a crucial role in governing the severity of allergic reactions and support underlying Th2-type immune responses. The aims of this project are to analyse the release of histamine from human basophils following their activation with various stimuli. The project will also give students a comprehensive insight into the techniques used to isolate and purify immune cells, such as basophils, from blood as well as skills in data analysis and literature reviews.
