Mexican Photo Gallery (1998)

All right. Here is a brief account of my trip to México during September of 1998. I was down in Puerto Vallarta for a conference of the American Quaternary Association. I got to travel this beautiful country and meet very friendly people for about two weeks. As you'll see later, I had a great time. Right after the conference, I hooked up with these two cool kiwis, Jocelyn and Mike. We rented a car, the standard red VW beetle, and just bombed around the mexican countryside for a while. We had a blast together! We drove from Puerto Vallarta, affectionately called "PV" by mexicans, all the way to Guadalajara, México's second largest city. As this was my first time in this country, I shot a lot of film. This is the story of my trip.

This following section contains shots from my time in Puerto Vallarta. When not at the conference, I stayed at these fantastic little hotels south of the Río Cuale in PV. Now that's were real México lies! The conference was held at this posh hotel called the Krystal where rooms go for $230USD during high season! A bit too much for my wallet, thank you very much, but I stayed there a few days just the same since we had excellent conference rates.

The view from my first hotel room, south of the Río Cuale in Puerto Vallarta. Strolling along the malecon (boardwalk) in PV.
By the end of the conference, I was giving tours of my bathroom. It sure attracted a lot of women! The beach at the hotel.
Statues along the malecon in downtown PV.

Right after the conference, Jocelyn, Mike and I rented this cool VW bug to get out of PV a bit and have some fun.

Our first stop was at this roadside stall selling pineapples! For 4 and a half pesos, it was the juiciest, sweetest pineapple we had ever tasted! That's Mike and Jocelyn leaning on the bug. A typical mexican landscape.

Driving along towards Guadalajara, we came across an archeological site called "Los Toriles" at Ixtlán del Río. Here are a few pictures of these ruins.

View of the "Squared Palace". View from the "Round Temple".
The round temple is in the background.

And finally we arrived in Guadalajara!

Partial view of the huge market. Inside an old spanish administrative building.
The cathedral as seen through a monument. Schoolgirls in their uniforms.
Workers cleaning a monument in the centro. Nice horse-drawn carriages. These are for tourists, in case you're wondering.

On the road again, heading east towards the coast.

Me taking a breather in some typical mexican city.

After five hours on the road, we reached the coastal town of San Blas.

Typical street scene in San Blas. Children having fun under the vigilant eye of one of the mothers.
View from inside the church. Picture of the interior of an abandonned church.
Looking into the church.

Our last day in México was spent snorkeling at Playa Mismaloya, a few kilometers south of Puerto Vallarta. What a great time we had!

Boating through Los Arcos. Little fishies!
Hey, look at the size of the fish Mike caught (on film)!

Well folks, there you have it, my trip to México. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
