Science Communication
The Knowledge Transfer team advises researchers on the topic of knowledge transfer, teaches the tools of good science communication and develops new formats for engaging with society, business and politics about science. In doing so, we cooperate with the Press & Communication department, as well as with decentralized initiatives such as the Oldenburg Network for Science Communication (OLWIK) and the press offices of university research institutes.
Formats & projects
Hirn vom Hahn
1 city, 7 pubs, 14 times science - that's the principle behind Hirn vom Hahn, a pub evening to get to know people who have made discovery their academic appointment: Between counters and bar stools, Oldenburg scientists chat about their everyday work and research. The different topics show: Science is anything but dry as dust and the world would be a different place without their findings. There are two 20-minute talks in each pub. In between, there will be enough time to switch to another of the participating pubs for the second talk." https://hirnvomhahn.de/
Oldenburg Science Slam
At a science slam, your own research is presented on stage in 10 minutes in an entertaining way: uol.de/scienceslam
Podcast "Hirn gehört"
Presenting the people behind the research and getting people excited about science - that is the aim of the podcast "Hirn gehört - Oldenburger Wissensschnack". There is a new episode every third Thursday of the month - wherever podcasts are available. The publisher is OLWIK. hirnvomhahn. de/podcast/
"Experience Science" bike tour
The "Experience Science" bike tour is dedicated to the topic of freedom at a total of eight stations and allows scientists to have their say, looking at the topic from different perspectives. Each stop looks at the topic from a different perspective. The bike tour makes science tangible and encourages people to think about freedom.
Along the cycle route through Oldenburg, you will find a QR code at each stop. Scanned with your smartphone, it will take you to a short scientific contribution to listen to. We recommend headphones for the best possible sound. All stations are open to the public, so you can reach them at any time and also visit them individually.

meet a scientist
Inspiring students with their own research and acting as role models for possible career paths in science - these are the goals of the meet a scientist format from XperimenT!, the NorthWest research centre for school pupils. Further information: www.sfz-nw.de/angebote/meet-a-scientist
The range of lectures is constantly being expanded, so please get in touch if you are interested!
Science Bench
One bench, two seats and plenty of space for scientific discussions in the middle of Oldenburg's city centre - that's the idea behind the Science Bench. A scientist sits down on the bench in a central square and invites citizens to join them. The aim of this knowledge transfer format is to have in-depth conversations about scientific topics and real-life issues (e.g. the future of energy, climate change, artificial intelligence or digitalisation in medicine). The one-to-one dialogue situation is intended to make science and researchers more approachable and break down stereotypes." https://www.schlaues-haus.de/science-bench/
SoundLab
The SoundLab is a mobile learning unit about the sense of hearing. It enables pupils to have active listening experiences, gain knowledge through independent research-based learning and raise awareness of people with hearing impairments.
Home game science (completed)
Heimspiel Wissenschaft brings scientists from rural regions back to their home towns. They explain what, how and why they do their research and what it has to do with all of our lives.
Science Watch Party "The Swarm" (completed)
The ingredients of a science watch party are simple: take a science fiction film or series and invite researchers from the relevant field to watch it together and separate science from fiction. https://hifmb. de/de/veranstaltung/schwarm/
Workshops
Our workshop Fundamentals of Science Communication provides an initial overview of the topic. It is aimed in particular at researchers who would like to communicate more about their research and covers the following aspects, among others:
- What is science communication and how does it differ from science journalism and public relations?
- Who are the relevant players and funding bodies in Germany?
- How has science communication developed over the years?
- What surveys are available on the public's perception of science?
- What are the motivations and goals for engaging in science communication?
- What makes good science communication and what formats are available?
Feel free to contact us for an individual in-person workshop!
