Guest Students
Welcome as a guest student at the University of Oldenburg!
For more than 40 years, the University of Oldenburg’s guest student programme has stood for lifelong learning and the university’s commitment to engaging with the wider community. From the very beginning, the aim has been to make academic education accessible to anyone interested and to foster exchange between the university and the local region. As a guest student, regardless of your age, educational background or career path, you can discover the diversity of the university in your own personal way. Whether you wish to attend individual courses out of interest, pursue targeted further education in the professional or personal areas, gain an initial insight into a potential degree programme as a school pupil, or simply share the joy of academic learning with others, our diverse range of courses offers you numerous opportunities.
In addition to the guest student programme, our term-time course programme offers a wide range of seminars specifically aimed at older adults. Guest student status is not required to take part in these events.
On the following pages, you can find out more about our various programmes, events and ways to get involved. If you have any questions or would like a personal consultation, we’re happy to help – whether by phone, email or in person.
Lecture evening: Loneliness as a societal challenge
Loneliness is increasingly becoming a major societal challenge. The COVID-19 pandemic, the intensive use of social media and the ongoing process of digitalisation have further exacerbated this trend. It is no longer just older people who are affected, but, to an increasing extent, young people too. Three keynote talks will explore the causes, manifestations and challenges of loneliness, ranging from psychological foundations and the role of digital media to social relationships in old age. The focus will be on questions such as: What does loneliness actually mean? What role does digitalisation play in the everyday lives of young people? And how do social relationships change in old age?
Following the talks, a panel discussion featuring the speakers and other practitioners from the field will provide an opportunity for joint discussion.
