Fees and financing your studies

Studying always costs money. The University of Oldenburg is a state financed institution, and most courses of study do not require tuition fees. However, all students do have to pay semester fees.

Have a look at the list of the various fees, so that you can see what to expect.

Semester contribution

All students pay a semester contribution. This includes contributions for the semester ticket, Studierendenwerk, student body, DIY bicycle repair workshop and administration. In addition, there are also fees for long-term study beyond the standard period of study and for supplementary subjects.

Long-term tuition fees

From the 2014/2015 winter semester, students on undergraduate degree programmes and consecutive Master's degree programmes will have a study credit.

"The study credit results from the number of semesters of the standard period of study for the selected undergraduate degree programme plus six additional semesters. For a consecutive Master's degree programme, the study credit is increased by the number of semesters of the standard period of study for this degree programme." (§ 12 NHG)

The universities charge "a long-term tuition fee of 500 euros for each semester on behalf of the state due to the increased utilisation of the state-funded university infrastructure" (§ 13 NHG). The study credit is reduced by the number of semesters of a previous degree programme at a state university in Germany.

Before you become liable to pay long-term tuition fees, you will be given the opportunity to be heard in writing. You can apply for an exception or submit a hardship application. Long-term study fees are due upon re-enrolment or are payable each semester upon re-registering students.

Tuition fees in professional development or fee-based degree programmes

Students who are enrolled in a professional development degree programme or fee-based degree programme must also pay the semester contribution in addition to the tuition fees. The semester contribution includes contributions for the semester ticket (not applicable for online courses), Studierendenwerk, the student body and administration. The long-term study fee (EUR 500) is charged if you are enrolled in an undergraduate degree programme at the same time.
