Advanced Nursing Practice - Master's Programme

The degree programme has a modular structure and comprises a total of 120 credit points (CP). The modules are divided into a compulsory and a compulsory elective area: 

• Compulsory area 72 CP
• compulsory elective area 18 CP 
• Master's thesis together with a final colloquium 30 CP

The modules in the compulsory area are based on the role model of Advanced Nursing Practice (according to Hamric) and are divided into the subject areas:

• Clinical Action
• Clinical Knowledge
• Nursing Science 

In the compulsory elective area, students can deepen their skills in the following areas of 

• professional development
• nursing and digitalisation
• skills and abilities for scientific project work

The workload of the degree programme is divided into attendance and self-study time. Most of the attendance time takes place at the Carl von Ossietzky University. Selected seminars in the compulsory elective area are offered proportionately online.

Semester 1-3

On-campus study takes place on two fixed days a week. 

The central element to support self-study is the internet-based working and learning environment Stud.IP of the University of Oldenburg, on which all courses are organised. For some modules, subject-specific study material has been developed which is interactively integrated into Stud.IP. 

50% of the face-to-face teaching in the compulsory elective modules takes place online and on campus. Some compulsory elective modules are offered as a block week, which does not take place during the usual lecture period.

Semester 4

No attendance time at the university is planned, as all seminars and lectures take place online. In this semester, students are scheduled to complete the work shadowing programme, which can therefore also take place abroad.

Semester 5

Weekly colloquia (2 SWS) are held to accompany the Master's thesis. These will take place online or in person, depending on the students' needs. 

In order to study this course at the University of Oldenburg as a student from outside of Germany, you need an adequate knowledge of German.

German Language Proficiency

• DSH: Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (Level 2) or
• TestDaF: Test – Deutsch als Fremdsprache (with level 4 in all four areas) or
• Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) Level C1

The proof of language proficiency must not be older than 5 years at the time of application and must be presented for the enrolment.

Graduates are awarded a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree. They are qualified to carry out extended nursing tasks in clinical care. 

Possible professional fields include:

• Advanced practice nurse, nursing expert, specialist, counselling & coaching 
• Clinical management function in inpatient and outpatient nursing practice
• Head of practice development
• University research and/or teaching in nursing science
• R&D in healthcare companies.

Graduates with a Master of Science degree also have the prospect of a university career in research and teaching via a doctorate. 

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree from a suitable previous degree program in nursing, nursing/health sciences, midwifery, therapy sciences or another relevant degree programme (e.g. nursing education, nursing management) with at least 180 CP.

Relevant courses of study must

• include nursing science/research worth at least 20 credit points
• include evidence-based clinical nursing practice worth at least 15 credit points
• integrate vocational training for nurses or require such training for admission (if the previous studies did not integrate such training, proof must be provided accordingly)

This is an open admissions degree course, and application is only possible in the winter semester.

For open-admission Master's degree programmes it is strongly recommended to submit their applications as early as possible before 15 July for the winter semester and before 15 January for the summer semester. If the supporting documents are submitted after these dates but before the standard application deadlines, this may have disadvantages for the start of your studies.
