About us

The Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) is an interdisciplinary research institute dedicated to advancing fundamental and applied marine research. With over 20 internationally renowned research groups, ICBM focuses on understanding the function of marine environmental systems through the integration of diverse scientific disciplines, including chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematical modeling.

The position offered serves to promote junior researchers. It includes a teaching obligation of 2,68 LVS as part of the ICBM degree programs. There is the possibility to participate in the Oldenburg Graduate School OLTECH.

Your tasks

The Pelagic Microbiology research group offers a vibrant and collaborative atmosphere where we employ both cultivation and cultivation-independent techniques to investigate microorganisms in aquatic environments. Our integrated approach bridges holistic strategies, such as community-wide shotgun sequencing, with reductionist methods like single-cell genomics and intermediate approaches such as cultivated microbial model communities. The integration of these approach enables us to explore microbial interactions in-depth.

The primary objective of this research project is to study microbial associations and interactions in aquatic environments, with a specific focus on vitamin biosynthesis, vitamin auxotrophies, and complex interdependencies. The work will combine advanced cultivation techniques with cutting-edge technologies, such as metagenomics, to elucidate microbial dynamics.

Your profile

  • A qualifying academic degree (Master's or diploma, not from a University of Applied Sciences) in microbiology or a related discipline.
  • Prior experience with cultivating model microbial communities.
  • Experience with vitamin analysis in the context of microbial interactions.
  • Proven ability to work in an international environment.
  • Demonstrated capability to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to provide and act on constructive feedback.

We are seeking an innovative, energetic, and collaborative individual to join our team.

We Offer

  • A supportive and intellectually stimulating research environment.
  • Opportunities for professional development and international collaboration.
  • The chance to contribute to innovative research addressing fundamental ecological questions.

Our standards

The University of Oldenburg is dedicated to increase the percentage of female employees in the field of science. Therefore, female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
