Your tasks

  • Teaching in the field of English-language literary and cultural studies, with a special focus on Anglophone literary and cultural studies as well as postcolonial studies, according to the teaching regulations of the federal state of Lower Saxony (LVVO) and with reduced teaching duties (4–5 courses/9 teaching hours per week). Courses taught will be primarily first-year courses, but also intermediate (BA level) and advanced courses (MA level)
  • Supervising students with regard to both academic and administrative matters
  • Fulfilling administrative tasks within the Institute of English and American Studies (in cooperation with and as part of a team of colleagues from all areas of English and American Studies)
  • Participating in committees at the institute, faculty, and/or university level
  • Participating in the organisation, implementation and support of digital teaching and learning formats (including examinations)
  • Participating in the coordination and implementation of processes in the field of quality management
  • Participating in the implementation of advisory and informational services at the Institute of English and American Studies

Your profile

Requirements: 

  • Master’s degree or equivalent diploma (with an above average grade) in the field of English/American/Anglophone Studies with a focus on literary and cultural studies, or in a related field
  • Ph.D./doctoral degree in the field of English-language (British, American or Anglophone) literary and cultural studies
  • Research experience (for instance in the form of the doctoral dissertation or other publications and presentations) focusing on at least one region and field relevant to postcolonial Anglophone literary and cultural studies
  • A sufficiently wide background in literary and cultural studies for introductory teaching
  • Familiarity with current research and approaches in literary and cultural theory, including postcolonial theory
  • Experience in teaching British, American or Anglophone literary and cultural studies at university level
  • Ability and readiness to engage in teamwork; communication and advisory skills
  • IT skills (MS Office etc.)
  • Native or near-native knowledge of English (C2)
  • Knowledge of German at B2 level or higher 

Preference will be given to applicants who fulfil as many of the following additional criteria as possible:

  • Experience in teaching a wide range of regions in the field of Anglophone literary and cultural studies at university level
  • Familiarity with the history of as well as current research and approaches in literary and cultural theory, including postcolonial theory as well as intersectional gender studies
  • Experience in fulfilling organisational tasks within academic administration in an efficient as well as team- and addressee-oriented way
  • Experience in the following areas (relevant to the institute as a whole): digital organisation of examinations and digital examination methods; digital teaching and learning formats; quality management; international student mobility
