The Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) is an interdisciplinary institute of the University of Oldenburg with facilities in Oldenburg and Wilhelmshaven. It is the only university institute in Lower Saxony that covers broad areas of marine science in both research and teaching. 26 working groups from various disciplines, particularly the natural sciences - including biology, chemistry, physics and also mathematics and social sciences - belong to the institute. The ICBM operates the coastal observatory Spiekeroog and is home institute of the research vessel Sonne. The ICBM at the School of mathematics and science seeks applications for a

Professorship (f/m/x) in Theoretical Physical Oceanography
salary scale W2

commencing as soon as possible

We offer a creative, international and inspiring working environment in which interdisciplinary cooperation within the ICBM, nationally and internationally in research and teaching is encouraged. Our unique infrastructure offers exceptional opportunities for the development of new research directions. As a certified family-friendly university, the compatibility of work and family is a particular interest of ours.

We are searching for an internationally renowned marine scientist who represents the field in research and teaching in its entirety. The professorship to be filled should address fundamental questions in theoretical physical oceanography. With a focus on the open ocean, the professorship aims to develop a profound understanding of the complex physical processes in the oceans and their impact on the marine environment. The research area includes interactions between large oceanic currents, eddies, fronts, and the coast, as well as analyzing their effects on the distribution of heat, nutrients, marine life and the sea floor. Research will involve the development of nonlinear ocean models, numerical simulations, and data-driven assessment and description of oceanic phenomena.
Applicants are asked to demonstrate their ability to connect to the described areas in research and teaching in a concept of max. 5 pages each.
The commitment to participate in current and future interdisciplinary collaborative projects at the ICBM is required. We offer excellent opportunities to network within the institute and to develop new initiatives. Teaching responsibilities include the field of physical oceanography to be represented in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs.
As the University of Oldenburg and the University of Bremen are bound by a cooperation agreement, active participation in the cooperation is expected.

Prerequisites for employment are specified in section 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (NHG).

Further prerequisites:

  • Excellence in research as documented by the publication record in physical oceanography
  • Documented relevant teaching experience in a university setting
  • International experience, generally attained by research stays abroad
  • Successful acquisition of third-party funding

Appreciated are:

  • Willingness to apply data science methods and artificial intelligence for comparison with observational data
  • Synergies with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI, Marine Perception research department) in Oldenburg

The University aims to increase its proportion of woman in science. Equally qualified woman will be considered preferentially. In case of equal aptitude, applicants with disabilities will be given priority in hiring decisions. The position is suitable for part-time employment.
