About us

The newly funded Cluster of Excellence NaviSense for the Sensory Basis, Mechanisms, and Impacts of Animal Navigation is a collaborative, interdisciplinary research project hosted at the University of Oldenburg and involving national and international partner institutions. As a diverse and international team of scientists from biology, physics, chemistry, computer sciences and social sciences we study the senses and mechanisms used by animals to navigate, and how these mechanisms can inspire technology and impact society, ecology, and biodiversity. The Cluster of Excellence integrates a wide range of structures for supporting early career researchers, which are anchored in the NavNextGen Academy. Your tasks

The position involves coordinating and running programmes for international doctoral researchers in the Cluster of Excellence and supporting them in matters relating to their doctoral studies, from onboarding to completion of their thesis. The position also involves coordinating and running science communication formats in the Cluster of Excellence.

The tasks include in particular:

  • Day-to-day coordination of the NavNextGen Academy incl. strategic planning and content development
  • Coordination and organisation of the weekly interdisciplinary seminar and of events and workshops for doctoral researchers
  • Development of a science communication strategy
  • Design, coordination and implementation of science communication formats and events
  • Supporting scientists involved in the Cluster of Excellence in science communication
  • Public relations and press work, including maintenance of the website and social media presence

Your profile

Required qualifications:

  • University degree (master’s degree, diploma (university)) in Biology
  • Experience in scientific work as a doctoral researcher
  • Experience in working in international teams
  • Experience in organising and running scientific events
  • Scientific experience in the field of animal navigation research
  • Very good English skills
  • Knowledge of the onboarding process for international (doctoral) students in Germany (e.g. assistance with applying for immigration documents, residence permits, etc.)

Preferable/Desirable:

  • Experience in project management
  • Experience in working with graphics programmes (e.g. Adobe Photoshop)
  • German
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Organisational skills, creativity and solution-oriented approach to work
  • A high degree of reliability, commitment and motivation, as well as a team-oriented and service-oriented approach to work
