Michael Sommer published a range of standard works on Roman and Phoenician history. His latest books are concerned with the economic history of antiquity (Beck-Wissen, 2013), general roman history in two volumes (Kröner, 2009-2013), the barracks emperors (WBG, 2. Auflage 2010) the complete Roman emperor (Thames & Hudson, 2010) and the history and culture of the Phoenicians (2008). An introduction to ancient economic history is in preparation.

In addition Sommer published many articels in international journals and edited volumes.
