Orientation and Goals
The master's programme in European History is a research oriented course of studies that focuses on the acquisition of methods and transfer skills, as well as practical professionalisation.
Study Design and Contents
The standard period of study for this programme is four semesters. During this time, students acquire technical and methodological as well as social and personal skills in the following areas:
- epoch-specific specialist studies (40 ECTS cedits)
- interdisciplinary research (10 ECTS cedits)
- historical professionalisation (10 ECTS cedits)
- research project (30 ECTS credits)
Teaching and Learning
This course of studies offers students a wide variety of teaching and learning forms and opportunities for independent research work under professional supervision. The following elements play an important role in this:
project and research oriented teaching;
an integrated semester abroad;
a mentor programme in which students are integrated.
Reasons for Studying
In addition to the advantages inherent in studying at a 'campus university' with a manageable size and correspondingly ideal degree of personal supervision, there are other good reasons to pursue a master's in European History. These include:
- international orientation of teaching;
- close coordination with European partner universities;
- forward looking specialisation areas;
- research oriented study.
Foreign Language Skills
In order to study this course at the University of Oldenburg as a student from outside of Germany, you need an adequate knowledge of German.
German Language Proficiency
You can proof your German language proficiency with the following language certificates:
- DSH: Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (Level 2)
- TestDaF: Test – Deutsch als Fremdsprache (with level 4 in all four areas)

Careers and Areas of Employment
This programme is geared toward a scholarly career path with the opportunity to continue on to a doctoral programme, or alternatively move into other academically oriented careers outside academia (e.g. museums, publishers, archives, and other institutions concerned with documentation).
Target Group/Admission Requirements
Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in History or in a closely related field worth at least 60 ECTS credits.
Application/Admission Procedures
This is an open admissions degree course, and applications are accepted for both the winter and summer semesters.
The application deadline for the winter semester is 30 September.
The application deadline for the summer semester is 31 March.

For open-admission Master's degree programmes it is strongly recommended to submit their applications as early as possible before 15 July for the winter semester and before 15 January for the summer semester. If the supporting documents are submitted after these dates but before the standard application deadlines, this may have disadvantages for the start of your studies.
