Orientation and Goals
This master's programme in mathematics offers a variety of opportunities for students to enhance and expand their knowledge in the main mathematical disciplines, not to mention their mutual relationships and applications. Students choose a specialisation and a suitable elective subject area. The core areas are pure mathematics (analysis or algebra/discrete mathematics) or mathematical applications (applied mathematics, stochastic, biomathematics). Students who enjoy problem solving, logical and structural thinking, and geometric imagination should definitely consider this programme. Other qualities that may be beneficial in this programme include a readiness to overcome problems through one's own effort, as well as interest in communicating with people of other disciplines and nationalities.
Study Design and Contents
You will study courses in the above-mentioned areas of study totalling 66 ECTS credits, whereby you can choose one area as a specialisation. In addition, there is the minor subject and general career preparation courses (professionalisation area) with a total of 24 ECTS credits. Possible minor subjects include biology, chemistry, computer science, philosophy, physics, environmental sciences and economics. In the final Master's thesis (30 ECTS credits), you document your ability to study current research literature and to scientifically analyse and present mathematical problems.
Teaching and Learning
Modules generally consist of one or two lectures and a corresponding practical session or tutorial. One can also consist of a seminar and an accompanying scientific work. Leading a tutorial or completing an internship off campus can be counted as a professionalisation module.
Reasons for Studying
Working independently and connecting current research areas are important parts of this programme. Special working areas include insurance and financial mathematics and applied statistics, cryptography, coding theory and number theory, as well as analysis and mathematical modelling.
Foreign Language Skills
In order to study this course at the University of Oldenburg as a student from outside of Germany, you need an adequate knowledge of German.

You can proof your German language proficiency with the following language certificates:
- DSH: Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (Level 2)
- TestDaF: Test – Deutsch als Fremdsprache (with level 4 in all four areas)

Careers and Areas of Employment
Mathematicians are able to apply their expert training and skills to analysing and developing complex relationships, in a very wide variety of areas. For this reasons, they can thrive in a number of different careers, especially where independence and technical responsibility are very important. They can work in many career areas including insurance and banking, consulting, research and development, industry, scientific institutes, public service, software firms, and in data processing. Furthermore, this master's degree programme qualifies students to carry their educational careers to the doctoral level.
Target Group/Admission Requirements
Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in Mathematics or from prior studies in a closely related field (specialist skills see admissions regulations).
Application/Admission Procedures
This is an open admissions degree course, and applications are accepted for both the winter and summer semesters.
The application deadline for the winter semester is 30 September.
The application deadline for the summer semester is 31 March.
