At the School of Mathematics and Science there are two core areas in research

• Nano and Energy Research
• Biodiversity Research und Marine Sciences

In addition to those two, the theoretically interested groups and the groups engaged in mathematical modelling form a central and connective element in many research activities within the faculty. The groups working on didactics are integrated in their branch of science. They are substantially contributing to communicate knowledge in all areas of school and out-of-school education, particularly by training future teachers and support the professional development of school personnel.
