The Institute of Biology and Environmental Sciences (IBU) at the School of Mathematics and Science (School V) seeks applications for a

Professorship in Soil Ecology (m/f/x)
salary scale W2

commencing as soon as possible.

The professor must be engaged in internationally recognized, outstanding research in soil ecology, emphasising on the interaction between plants and/or soil fauna with organic and inorganic soil compartments. Hence, we seek someone at the intersection between terrestrial ecology and classic soil science.

Conceivable research directions compatible with the profile of faculty and institute are, for example, dynamic processes within soils in the context of global change, whereby a focus on coastal environments or peatlands would be desirable. Research may be directed towards the role of soils for terrestrial/aquatic ecosystems in a changing environment or organismal (plant-microorganisms), biochemical (carbon and nutrient cycling) and molecular interactions in soils with special focus on their relevance for matter fluxes into adjacent environmental compartments such as the coastal sea. The willingness and compatibility to join collaborative research projects such as the DFG research units DynaCom, DynaDeep and follow-up proposals, and/or new collaborative research initiatives in the context of the institutes guiding principle “from genes to senses to ecosystems” is required.

The professorship is central to the future development of collaborative research in the focal areas of ecology/environmental sciences and biodiversity/evolutionary biology as well as in the area of basic and applied research on soil preservation and nature conservation.

Prerequisites for employment are excellence in research as documented by the publication record, documented relevant teaching experience in a university setting and successful acquisition of competitive third-party funding. Applicants shall demonstrate their ability to connect to the described focus areas in research and teaching in a concept of max. 5 pages each.

With respect to teaching, the professorship will cover soil sciences including soil ecology in undergraduate modules in the Bachelor programmes “Environmental Sciences” and “Biology” as well as the Master programmes “Landscape Ecology” and “Biology“. Participation in the graduate school "Environmental Sciences and Biodiversity" is desired. We highly value pedagogical skills and require university teaching experiences.

As the University of Oldenburg and the University of Bremen are bound by a cooperation agreement, active participation in the cooperation is expected.

Prerequisites for employment are specified in section 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (NHG).

The University aims to increase its proportion of women in science. Equally qualified female candidates will be given preferential consideration. In case of equal aptitude, applicants with disabilities will be given priority in the hiring decision. The position is suitable for part-time employment. The faculty provides support with coaching sessions for newly appointed professors. Junior research group leaders (Emmy Noether program, ERC etc.) are strongly encouraged to apply.
