Anna Langenbruch is Professor of Cultural History of Music at the Music Department of the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg. Since 2016, she has directed the research group "Music History on Stage: Constructions of the Musical Past in Music Theater", which is part of the German Research Foundation’s Emmy Noether Program.
After studying Music and Mathematics in Cologne (2005: first state examination), she completed her bi-national PhD in 2011 at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media and the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in Paris with a thesis on the musical agency of German-speaking émigrés in Paris between 1933 and 1939 (published as Topographien musikalischen Handelns im Pariser Exil, Hildesheim: Olms 2014). Langenbruch received diverse research grants (including doctoral scholarships from Evangelisches Studienwerk Villigst, Franco-German University, German Academic Exchange Service, German Historical Institute Paris and Mariann Steegmann Foundation). In 2014, she was a visiting researcher at Harvard University (Cambridge, MA) as well as an associated junior fellow at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg Institute for Advanced Study (2014-16).
Her research interests focus on the cultural history of exile and migration, inter-medial music historiography, music theater (18th-21st century), the history of science and humanities as well as gender studies.
Anna Langenbruch is a member of the advisory committee of the German Musicological Society and editor of the Enzyklopädie der Neuzeit Online’s music section.
