Molecular Biomedicine - Master's Programme

The Master's degree programme has a duration of four semesters. Different modules can be freely combined over three semesters to earn a total of 60 CP (compulsory elective modules) + 30 CP (optional modules) = 90 CP. The 4th Semester is devoted to the Master's thesis (30 CP).

The modules are divided into the categories of:

 

• Background Modules, at least 24 CP
• Clinical Modules, at least 12 CP
• Research Modules, at least 15 CP
• Skills Modules, at least 9 CP

In terms of scheduling and content, the Master's degree programme in Molecular Biomedicine is structured in such a way that a broad range of courses is offered as well as a high level of general education in different fields of molecular life sciences and methods. It is also possible to specialise in basic cellular and molecular biology as well as various diseases, including degenerative diseases, and various genetic-diagnostic treatments.

The Master's programme is highly research-oriented, and this is reflected in the teaching. The aim of the Research Modules is for students to become familiar with several aspects of research-based teaching and learning (such as questioning and methodological skills, decision-making in complex situations including laboratory situations, analysis, reflection and self-reflection, research and presentation techniques, etc.) as well as to implement an entire research cycle. Within most modules, students practice reading and understanding scientific articles in English, for example, to supplement the lecture material or to bolster their understanding of the scientific principles of the experiments. All in all, the practical part of the Master's programme, with its broad range of methods, dealt with in depth in selected areas, provides an excellent basis for numerous fields of occupation in biomedicine.

The focus of the degree program “Molecular Biomedicine” is on the molecular mechanisms of cellular processes, whereby methods and the molecular understanding of the natural sciences are linked with current medical content.
In the field of neuroscience, there is the possibility of specializing in key areas in 
 

• biochemistry
• genetics
• molecular and cell biology
• electrophysiology.

A wide range of methods is used, ranging from microscopic techniques, heterologous gene expression and electrophysiological measurements to analyzing the reactions of neurons in cell groups and in the intact nervous system to analyzing behavioral patterns. Specialization in cell and molecular biology basics, degenerative diseases as well as genetic diagnostic therapies and regenerative medicine is possible in neurogenetics, human genetics, genetics of childhood brain malformation, ophthalmology and geriatrics. Through a wide range of specialist training and instruction in various methodological and conceptual areas, the students are enabled to carry out basic scientific as well as clinical research in the field of molecular biomedicine independently. 

All modules are offered in English.

In addition to medical technology, the biomedical sector is one of the most rapidly developing industries in Germany. The need for qualified young talent is correspondingly high. The Molecular Biomedicine master creates an excellent basis for a doctorate in the life sciences or demanding fields of activity in science and business.

German language skills are not required for admission.

In order to study this course at the University of Oldenburg, you need an adequate knowledge of English.

In addition to the ability to work as a scientist, the course also forms the basis for activities as a specialist in industrial research, development and product control (e.g. in the pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology or biomedical engineering companies), in biotechnological / clinical laboratories (especially for molecular and biochemical ones Diagnostics and clinical research) as well as at state authorities (state and federal health authorities, medical association, ministries, environmental protection authorities etc.). Graduates can also work as laboratory managers, biobank managers in research institutions and private laboratories, act as scientific advisors in the public and private sectors and become self-employed.

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a professionally suitable, previous degree program with a corresponding focus and special expertise in Biology with focus on molecular life sciences, Biochemistry, molecular Biology, molecular Biomedicine or other suitable programs with a total of at least 180 ECTS credits.
• Professionally suitable is a study program from the above mentioned fields in which at least 40 ECTS credits in at least three of the following subject areas were acquired: Molecular Biology, Genetics, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Physiology (Human or Animal), molecular Neurobiology
• English language proficiency at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
  Applicants who are not native speakers or have completed their first degree in English in a country with English or German as an official language need to provide an English Language certificate (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge First Certificate), which is no older than 2 years.

The fully completed “special eligibility form” must be submitted alongside the application documents (an updated version will soon be available).

This course of studies accepts a limited number of applicants, and application is only possible in the winter semester.
