Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden is a window for the public into the Carl-von-Ossietzky University of Oldenburg.

We have ten thousands of visitors every year which enjoy the flowers, trees, meadows and public greenhouses in our grounds. The primary objectives of normal parks and gardens are aesthetics and recreation. In our garden, however, the main task is to teach the awareness for organisms and nature, to point out the importance and value of biodiversity, and to spread the knowledge of evolutionary theory as the main key to understand all living organisms.

We provide plants for researchers and for classes at the university, we exhibit ongoing research projects, and offer guided tours through the garden. The garden is divided in a larger public show area situated at the Philosophenweg and a smaller and restricted area at the Küpkersweg which is our plant nursery and which is also dedicated to research.

A long-standing tradition of our garden is that we also exhibit a variety of interesting animals (mainly birds). Finally, we have a well equipped “Green School” in our garden. It is run by the chair for the didactics of biology and offers different courses for scholars of any age.
