Research emphasis
At the Institute of History all periods of history are represented in research: Ancient History, Medieval History, Early Modern History, Modern History as well as a further focus in the 20th century, Contemporary History.
Especially Germany, Britain, the Netherlands and Sweden, ancient Greece and Italy, as well as Eastern Europe are spatially covered in Western Europe. The History of Eastern Europe is represented by its own professorship in Oldenburg.
In addition to the specialized research there is a special focus on History Didactics.

Promoting young scientists
Currently there are about 20 academic staff members preparing for their doctoral and post-doctoral projects in the departments and running third-party projects; moreover there are some fellows and other doctoral students. All of these people help to pursue the existing research areas and equally take up new issues are addressed in the Oldenburg historical research.
