Africa and Europe: Migration and film

What role do the media and films play in the perception of African immigrants in Europe? This is the topic of the film series "Africa and Europe: Migration and Film" from 1 to 17 October at Cine K, Kulturetage cinema.

What role do the media and films play in the perception of African immigrants in Europe? This is the subject of the film series "Africa and Europe: Migration and Film" from 1 to 17 October at Cine K, Kulturetage cinema.

In the opening event "A picture says more than a thousand...", on Monday, 1 October, 6 p.m., Jan Kühnemund, research associate at the university's Migration Gender Politics working group, will introduce the topic. In an English lecture, he will use film clips to explain the portrayal of migration in international contemporary films. This will be followed by the documentary film "14 km - In Search of Happiness" by Gerardo Olivares (Spain).

The documentary films make it clear that migration processes within Africa are far more extensive and complex than the media-generated image of the "rush" of African migrants to "Fortress Europe". The film series also addresses the political role that the camera can play when reporting from the transnational spaces of migration. Further topics are: Support for migrants, reasons for fleeing, migration routes and racism, but also the relationships between emigrants and their relatives in their countries of origin.

The film and discussion series is organised by the University's European Master of Arts in Migration and Intercultural Relations (EMMIR) in cooperation with Cine K. The event series is supported by the Protestant Development Service, the Association of Lower Saxony Educational Initiatives, the DGB Youth Oldenburg and the Office for University and Trade Union Co-operation at the University of Oldenburg.
Admission prices: Single ticket 6 euros, ticket for four: 20 euros (transferable). The films will be shown in English or in the original language, with English subtitles. If required, German translation will be provided for both the lecture and the discussions after the film screenings.
