A smart mile to the start

Science communication in Oldenburg's city centre, with and for the citizens of the city and region: The Smart House Oldenburg will offer this in the future, whether through lectures, conferences or exhibitions.

Science communication in Oldenburg's city centre, with and for the citizens of the city and region: this will be available in future at The Smart House Oldenburg, whether through lectures, conferences or exhibitions.

The joint institution of the University and Jade University of Applied Sciences will be opened on Schlossplatz on 28 September: With an entertaining stage programme for young and old, guided tours of the building, a "Smart House Oldenburg Mile" and short lectures by Oldenburg scientists.

University President Prof. Dr Babette Simon, the President of Jade University, Dr habil Elmar Schreiber, the State Secretary in the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture, Dr Josef Lange, and Lord Mayor Prof. Dr Gerd Schwandner will give welcoming speeches. Scientific working groups and institutions will be presenting themselves in the "Smart Mile". For example, the university's "Thin Film Photovoltaics" working group will explain the "secret of the solar cell", Jade University of Applied Sciences will present research and development robots in the field of assistive technologies, the OFFIS Institute will explore "Computing Science in Everyday Life" in an experiment and the "Forscherbambini" association will organise hands-on experiments for children from kindergarten age.

In eleven short presentations on energy and climate, scientists will explain topics such as "Research for the energy of tomorrow", "Wind energy and turbulence" and the "Consequences of climate change for the energy industry". The full programme for the opening ceremony, together with the events planned by the Smart House in the coming months, is available at the Smart House and on the Internet.

"Climate and Energy" and "Housing and Living" are the main themes of the Smart House, which aims to promote dialogue between science and the public. The Smart House Oldenburg gGmbH is supported by the University of Oldenburg and the Jade University of Applied Sciences. The centre was made possible by the support of the state of Lower Saxony and the regional economy: EWE, Bremer Landesbank, Landessparkasse zu Oldenburg, Öffentliche Versicherung Oldenburg and Oldenburgische Landesbank.
