B1/B2/C1 Exam FAQs

B1/B2/C1-exam (English)

The Language Centre offers its own English examinations for levels B1, B2 and C1. These serve, for example, as entry requirements for some degree programmes at the University of Oldenburg. Please refer to the relevant degree programme or read the admission regulations for your desired degree programme or contact your student advisory service to find out which certificate you need to provide.

The examinations are based on the criteria of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The CEFR describes competences at different levels. In our exams, we test your receptive (listening and reading) and productive (speaking and writing) skills.

The exams are structured in the same way at all three levels: In the written part, there is a listening comprehension section, a section on your grammatical competences, a reading comprehension section and a text production section. In the oral exam, you will have a discussion with two examiners about your interests, your studies, etc. You should therefore be able to talk about these things, answer questions and keep the conversation going.

The Language Centre offers these examinations on a regular basis. You can find the current dates on these pages.

You can find more information about the tests in the respective levels. Please also read our FAQ!

B1 exam

The B1 exam serves as proof of language proficiency in some degree programmes at UOL. Please find out in the degree programme of your choice which certificates you need to provide and in what form. Please read the admission regulations and enquire with the subject advisor of your chosen degree programme.

The B1 exam tests language skills in the areas of listening, reading, writing and speaking at level B1 of the CEFR. We expect you to be able to talk about things you know, such as your studies and your hobbies. We expect you to be able to do this in complete and correct sentences, to be able to talk about your choice of study programme, your study interests and your career plans, and to have only minor difficulties in answering questions.

The Language Centre conducts this exam regularly. It takes place when five people have registered for an appointment.
Participation in an English course at the Language Centre is not a prerequisite for the test, but it certainly does no harm.

The test is exclusively for students of the University of Oldenburg!

B2 exam

The B2 language exam serves as proof of language proficiency in some degree programmes. Please find out in the degree programme of your choice which proof you need to provide and in what form. Please read the admission regulations and enquire with the subject advisors of your chosen degree programme!

The exam assessment is based on the B2 criteria of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). This is the standard and comprehensive set of guidelines used in Europe (and sometimes also outside Europe) to describe language abilities. Basically, we are assessing your receptive skills (reading and listening) and productive skills (written text and speaking). An accomplished B2 is considered somewhat higher level ‘independent user’, with a good degree of fluent and spontaneous communication without strain for either party.

You should understand the main ideas of complex texts, both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions from your field. You should be able to produce clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects, and explain viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

For spoken discussions, you should be able to understand language typical for personal, social, academic and professional life, on both familiar and unfamiliar topics. Clear, developed descriptions should be possible, with appropriate emphasis on important points, including supporting details. These apply for a wide range of subjects related to the field of study, as well as more generally.

The Language Centre conducts this exam regularly. Participation in an English language course at the Language Centre is not a prerequisite, but certainly does no harm.
