Block seminar BA Jewish Studies
PD Dr Anna-Dorothea Ludewig & Dr Ulrike Schneider: Peter Lilienthal's cinematic work and its references to literature
The Jewish filmmaker Peter Lilienthal, who was born in Berlin and returned from exile in Uruguay in the 1950s, was one of the most important directors of the New German Cinema and realised numerous co-productions between Germany and Latin American countries. He died in Munich in 2023 and his estate was transferred to the archive of the Akademie der Künste, with which he was closely associated. Lilienthal's library, in which traces of his work processes, his wide-ranging interests and his unrealised projects can be examined in a special way, has found a place in the Moses Mendelssohn Centre in Potsdam, where it is preserved and made accessible.
In the seminar, we will deal with both Peter Lilienthal's biography and his (cinematic) work. A particular focus will be on working with the estate library. The seminar will take place in blocks, first digitally (Zoom), then at the Moses Mendelssohn Centre and will conclude at the end of January with a workshop that will give students the opportunity to present their results (will be counted as an examination achievement).
The block seminar will take place on the following dates:
16.10.2025: 16.00-18.00 as a Zoom session
11.12.2025: 16.00-20.00 in presence at the MMZ
08.01.2026: 16.00-18.00 in presence at the MMZ
22.01. and 23.01.2026: 10.00-18.00 workshop at the MMZ
Interreligious Studies in Japan (ISJP)
Together with the NCC Center for the Study of Japanese Religions in Kyoto, the Evangelical Mission in Solidarity (EMS) is offering a three-month study programme with a practical component. Students and postgraduates experience Japanese religious diversity at close quarters, deepen their knowledge of Buddhism, Shinto and theology in dialogue - and hone their skills for interreligious encounters in church and society.
Further information in the flyer.
Learning in an interreligious context in India
The six-month study programme of the Evangelical Mission in Solidarity (EMS) at the Henry Martyn Institute (HMI) in Hyderabad, India, enables students from Germany to live and learn in a multi-religious environment and to experience interreligious dialogue in practice. The aim is to raise awareness of religious diversity and discover ways in which faith and dialogue can come together in a pluralistic society.
Further information can be found in the flyer.

External semester at the Heidelberg University of Jewish Studies - Friederike Henjes
Friederike Henjes spent her external semester at the Heidelberg University of Jewish Studies (HfJS) in the summer semester of 2018. The combination of the familiar atmosphere of the HfJS and the international environment of Heidelberg University enabled her to study between tradition and modernity. In addition to her specialisation in Jewish museology, she experienced the cultural life of the university - from Shabbat celebrations to the university choir - and gained valuable interdisciplinary and intercultural experience.

The podcast: Podwege - church projects introduce themselves
Patrizia Mandel-Birajdar created the podcast Podwege as part of her studies. Through a project with an ecumenical focus, she recognised the need for a medium that would put the innovative initiatives and projects of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldenburg in the spotlight.
With Podwege, Patrizia provides fascinating insights into the varied activities of the ELKiO and creates a platform that makes the lively interplay of church as host visible along the way.
Next year, there will be a second season in which Patrizia will set off again. Where exactly remains a secret for now!
