About us

The Quantum Biology and Computational Physics group at the University of Oldenburg studies quantum effects within systems of increased complexity on the nanoscale. The group applies and advances computational methods to understand nanoscale processes, including emerging fabrication techniques like FEBID (Focused Electron Beam Induced Deposition). The group seeks an individual to contribute to this research, focusing on advancing studies in FEBID and related nanoscale fabrication methods to drive innovation in nanotechnology and materials science.

Our group is located at the University of Oldenburg, Germany, and is part of several collaborative centres of excellence. These collaborations will give you access to a wide range of superb modern equipment, techniques, and expertise. You will become part of a larger team working closely together on related questions. For more information about our group, see https://uol.de/quantbio.

Your tasks

The overall goal of this project is centred on developing and applying stochastic dynamics methods to advance computational studies of the FEBID process. By emphasizing stochastic approaches, this project aims to enhance molecular dynamics (MD) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, enabling multiscale simulations that capture the complexity of molecular systems. The primary goal is to model chemical transformations in molecular systems exposed to radiation, leveraging irradiation-driven molecular dynamics (IDMD) as one of the key techniques. The work will also involve creating computational integrations between software tools to automate these stochastic simulations, facilitating seamless analysis of FEBID-related processes.

The primary responsibilities of a successful candidate will include developing and extending the theory of multiscale stochastic dynamics simulations; performing numerical simulations of processes related to FEBID fabrication of nanostructures; analysis of the simulation results; formulating and solving scientific problems and interpreting research results; collaborating with other scientists of the university and beyond, in particular within the COST Action CA20129 "Multiscale Irradiation and Chemistry Driven Processes and Related Technologies" (MultIChem) coordinated by MBN Research Center gGmbH (Frankfurt am Main); writing scientific publications and presenting results at international conferences; regular teaching duties per university regulation and supervision of bachelor/master students.

Your profile

The applicant must have a qualifying university degree (diploma or master’s) in Physics, Chemistry or related fields and a strong interest in developing theoretical methods and carrying out fundamental research in a collaborative research environment. We also require excellent mastery of English reading and writing. The successful candidate must have a profound background in computer simulations of many-body systems, including classical molecular dynamics simulations and quantum chemical calculations. Expertise in scientific computing is required, while knowledge of a programming language (e.g. Python, C++, Fortran) is considered advantageous.

Our standards

The University of Oldenburg is dedicated to increase the percentage of female employees in the field of science. Therefore, female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. In accordance to § 21 Section 3 NHG, female candidates with equal qualifications will be preferentially considered. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference in case of equal qualification.
