Excellence strategy

The University of Oldenburg is in the running for three Clusters of Excellence: in the fields of marine, hearing and animal navigation research.

Cooperation with BYRD (Bremen University)

Since 2016, there has been a cooperation agreement between the universities of Bremen and Oldenburg in the area of graduate support. Doctoral candidates at the University of Oldenburg can therefore take advantage of the BYRD (Bremen Early Career Researcher Development) qualification programs. Take a look right now!

Active in network for Graduate Training

The University of Oldenburg has been an active member of the German University Association of Advanced Graduate Training (GUAT) for many years. The exchange in this network constantly provides new impulses and is central to the strategic work in the area of academic career paths.

Alliances and Networks

The University of Oldenburg cooperates closely with regional and international partners in the areas of research, teaching and studies. In addition, the qualification of academics in early career phases is also promoted across the university.

Excellent research with regional and international partners

The University of Oldenburg has been conducting excellent research together with the universities in the region for over ten years.

Excellence in marine research

The complex interactions between organisms and their environment are the focus of biodiversity and marine research at the University of Oldenburg. Researchers from Oldenburg have been involved in the Ocean Floor Cluster of Excellence at the University of Bremen since 2019. In a future joint cluster, the universities want to pool their expertise in order to further decipher the role of the seabed for material cycles and biodiversity under changing climatic conditions. The aim is also to provide a scientific basis for the protection and sustainable use of the oceans.

Excellence in Hearing Research

Together with hearing researchers from Hannover Medical School and Leibniz Universität Hannover, the University of Oldenburg has been successfully running the Cluster of Excellence "Hearing4all: Models, technology and solutions for diagnostics, restoration and support of hearing" since 2012. Since the start of the cluster, funding has amounted to around 79 million euros. The aim of those involved is to eliminate the negative effects of hearing loss on individuals by providing easily accessible and affordable, efficient and effective technical hearing solutions for everyone, anywhere and at any time.

Excellence in animal navigation

The project team led by Oldenburg biologist Prof. Dr. Henrik Mouritsen wants to research the sensory systems and mechanisms that animals use to navigate over long distances. They also want to show how these mechanisms inspire technologies and how they can affect society, ecology and biodiversity. Researchers from the Institute of Avian Research (Wilhelmshaven), the University of Bayreuth, the University of Oxford (United Kingdom), Lund University (Sweden) and Oldenburg's partner university Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (Netherlands) are also significantly involved in "NaviSense". In addition, the researchers involved are networked with over 100 national and international scientific institutions.

Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg Delmenhorst

Founded in 1995, the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (HWK) in Delmenhorst is a non-profit foundation under private law supported by the states of Lower Saxony and Bremen and the city of Delmenhorst. The main task of the HWK is to strengthen the nationally and internationally recognized research potential of the surrounding universities and research institutions, in particular the universities of Oldenburg and Bremen.

Postdoc programme of the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg
The postdoc program of the HWK supports scientists in early career phases of all disciplines. As a fellow, researchers gain access to HWK events and the international network and can ultimately organize an international workshop with the support of the HWK.

Strategic partner universities

The University of Oldenburg currently has two strategic partner universities: the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (Netherlands) and the Nelson Mandela University (South Africa). The strategic cooperation extends across all faculties and covers the areas of teaching and research.

Non-university research institutions

It is not uncommon for academics to pursue careers outside of universities , where they are also in demand. The University of Oldenburg maintains close relationships with non-university research institutions in the city of Oldenburg and the region.
