The Institute of Philosophy and the C3L - Center for Lifelong Learning at the University of Oldenburg are cooperating with the Karl Jaspers Society for this event. For members of the Jaspers Society and guest students, the regular admission fee of 7 euros is reduced to 5 euros. Students have free admission.
Thomas Meyer is the editor of the large study edition of Hannah Arendt, which has been published by Piper Verlag for years with new introductions and afterwords by experts. He recently published "Hannah Arendt - The Biography", a comprehensive appraisal of her life and work, which for the first time traces Arendt's Jewish roots in detail and also impresses with new findings on her first exile in France.
The guiding principle of Meyer's account is Arendt's statement: "I do not believe that there is any thinking process that is possible without personal experience. All thinking is reflection, in essence - thinking." The Munich-based historian of ideas and cultural philosopher, who also writes regularly for "Die Zeit" and the "Süddeutsche Zeitung", uses new sources to outline the intellectual path of the Hanover-born philosopher from Königsberg to New York.
His biography also sheds light on the fascination and criticism that her person and writings have triggered throughout her life and makes the phenomenon of "Hannah Arendt" recognizable for both interested parties and experts.
The event is part of the "Arendt Forum" series, which is being held this time at the Karl Jaspers House by the Chair of Comparative History of Ideas in conjunction with the University Center for Lifelong Learning. The discussion will be led by Matthias Bormuth, who heads the "Hannah Arendt Center Research Unit" there.
