Elementary Mathematics - Dual-Subject Bachelor's Programme

Within the scope of the Dual-subject Bachelor, you can take Elementary Mathematics

  • as a primary or secondary dual subject (60 ECTS credits) or
  • as a Minor (30 ECTS credits) combined with a Major

Elementary Mathematics can be studied either in connection with a non-teaching career goal or as a professional teaching qualification. If you want to become a teacher, you must follow the combinations of subjects for each teaching position.

Orientation and Goals

Elementary Mathematics is the area of mathematics that includes the basic skills that we deal with on a daily basis. It encompasses the basic mathematical terms and structures that human beings have worked with for centuries. In many areas of our lives, we both consciously and unconsciously deal with geometric figures, symmetry and patterns, numbers and operations, graphic representations and tables, algebraic structures and functional relationships. These are all part of the curriculum in the Grundschule, Hauptschule, and Realschule. Elementary mathematics at the University of Oldenburg teaches the technical and didactic basics of mathematics as a taught subject in these three kinds of schools.

Foreign Language Skills

In order to study this course at the University of Oldenburg as a student from outside of Germany, you need an adequate knowledge of German.

German Language Proficiency
You can proof your German language proficiency with the following language certificates:

  • DSH: Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (Level 2)
  • TestDaF: Test – Deutsch als Fremdsprache (with level 4 in all four areas)

The proof of language proficiency must be presented for the enrolment. For other proof possiblities see: Language requirements

Careers and Areas of Employment

The Bachelor prepares students for a Master's programme, which enables them to teach at primary, lower secondary and intermediate schools or for special needs education, depending on their orientation.

However, relevant mathematics didactics basics are already taught in the Bachelor's programme. The degree therefore opens up opportunities in the context of teaching and learning mathematics up to the content of the tenth grade.

Fields of employment also exist outside the school sector, e.g.

  • in the qualified diagnosis and support of children with mathematical learning difficulties or
  • with special talents, in the development of digital learning offers or
  • in textbook publishers.
