Helping refugee children and young people from Ukraine get started in German schools: Students of special education at the University of Oldenburg will be taking on this voluntary task at an Oldenburg secondary school in the coming weeks. The offer is also available to other schools in the city.
"Despite their limited space and staffing capacities, the Oldenburg schools have set out to take in Ukrainian pupils as quickly and unbureaucratically as possible," says Prof Dr Clemens Hillenbrand, Professor of Education and Didactics for Learning Disabilities.
The students wanted to help with this. In response to a request from the Alexanderstraße secondary school, 29 students were found "in a very short space of time", says Hillenbrand. Over the coming weeks, they will accompany the children and young people in their everyday school life and actively help to organise the school's various activities.
The practical experience and skills in special educational support gained through this voluntary work would benefit the students in their future academic appointments. Interested schools can contact or from the Institute for Special and Rehabilitation Education.
