What our Alumni say

Hanna Lüschow

Why did you decide to do the Master's programme "Language Dynamics"?

I decided to do the Master's programme "Language Dynamics" because I noticed in my German Studies Bachelor's degree that the linguistics modules appealed to me the most. Since this program is made up of all the linguistics departments at the University of Oldenburg, it was a perfect fit for my interests. In addition, I was able to get to know other institutes than the one for German Studies.

What did you find particularly positive?

I was immediately struck by the good atmosphere and the fact that as a student you are on an equal footing with the teachers. You are directly informed about the current linguistics research fields at the university and are often even integrated. For example, I was very quickly offered a job supporting research in Dutch studies, which I of course gladly accepted.

In what ways has the degree program helped you?

The program offers students who are interested in an academic career a special opportunity to gain practical experience during their studies. Not only is it good for your resume, but it also lets you know before you graduate if this is the right direction for you. In addition, I was also given the opportunity to practically apply and expand knowledge from the second subject of my bachelor's degree (computer science), which also helped me.

Which subject area did you find particularly interesting?

Personally, I am most interested in graphematics (the science of writing systems), so I also wrote my master's thesis in this area.

What are you doing now?

I have been working at the Department of German Studies with Nanna Fuhrhop since October 2018, continuing the research I started in my master's thesis with the goal of earning a PhD.

Regina Hert

Why did you decide to do the Master's programme "Language Dynamics"?

I previously studied Romance languages in Hamburg, with a focus on Spanish and Italian. For my Master's degree, I wanted to become more general in terms of linguistics. Why language dynamics? The division into the three main areas sounded very interesting to me.

What did you find particularly positive?

I found the relationship between student and prof/lecturer to be particularly positive. I had the feeling that I was well supervised. In addition, as a student assistant, I also got an insight into research at the Institute of Dutch Studies.

In what way did the study program help you?

The course was not too theoretical; we often conducted a small study for exams. That way you could gain practical experience.

Which subject area did you find particularly interesting?

In the area of language acquisition (psycholinguistics), I took two seminars on pronoun processing. What I find interesting about this topic is that the understanding of object pronouns begins at different times in language acquisition, i.e. earlier in German-speaking children than in English-speaking children.

What are you doing now?

I am doing my PhD at the University of Alberta in Canada. Here I am working in a project on children's pronoun processing.
