The University as institution

The university has to take care of many things. For example: buildings, staff, students. For this, there are many tasks in the administration. All decisions are important for climate protection.

Energy

We need energy for many things at university. For example:

  • Electricity for lamps and computers
  • Gas for heating and hot water

We want to use less energy. That's better for the climate. That's why we check every year: How can we use even less energy? How can we renovate buildings so that they keep the heat inside better in winter?

The university has a particularly large number of solar panels. The system makes electricity from the sun. That's better for the climate. That's why the university has made the solar plants bigger and bigger. The last solar installations will be added in 2022 at the Haarentor site. The electricity is only for the university.

On the road in Germany

It is better for the climate to use less petrol. So you should drive less. That's why we make good offers for students and staff:

Bicycle parking spaces

Many people in Oldenburg ride bicycles. We like to support that. People can park the bike safely at the university. There are about 4 thousand spaces for bicycles. And we are planning more places with roofs.

Tickets for bus and train

All students get a pass for the university. This is the: CampusCard. With it they can

  • travel by bus and train in Oldenburg.
  • travel on many trains in Lower Saxony and Bremen.

The students can decide: Do I want to pay a little more? Then they can use the pass to travel on buses, trains and many trains throughout Germany. The cost is: 16.60 euros a month.

All employees can get a JobTicket for bus and rail. This means they pay less for a monthly ticket on the Bremen/LowerSaxony Transport Association. That's VBN for short. The ticket can be chosen to suit the route. Currently, there is no offer for employees to travel throughout Germany.

On the road abroad

Many researchers from different countries work together. That's why some researchers often travel abroad. And students can study in other countries for a short time.

We pay attention to: How can the researchers and students travel in a way that is as good as possible for the climate? For example: maybe they can travel by train instead of by plane? Or maybe they can meet on the internet?

There are various projects for this:

Students can get funding in the programme: Green Erasmus. That's how it's pronounced: Grien Erasmus. The programme pays travel costs for students who study abroad. The climate is taken into account. For example: Maybe a plane is faster than a train. But the train journey is better for the climate. Maybe the train journey is more expensive than the flight. Then the programme pays for the train because it is better for the climate.

Researchers can sign a list: I no longer travel by plane for short distances. I'll take the train. For example: from Oldenburg to Munich. This is my way of showing that I travel in a way that is as good as possible for the climate.

Researchers from different universities are working together on a project. How can we fly less and still work well together? The project is called " flying less". In German it means: flying less. And it's pronounced like this: flei-ing less.

More plants and animals
on our grounds

At the university there are various projects and areas for the protection of plants and animals. For example:

  • a garden where students garden
  • Meadows with flowers
  • birdhouses for breeding
  • Boxes for insects

Shopping well and less waste

When you make things, you need materials and energy to do so. We pay attention to this when we buy things:

* Have the manufacturers paid attention to sustainability?

* Do the manufacturers offer good working conditions?

Others confirm that we comply. That's why we are a: Fairtrade University.

And we care about what we can do better on the subject of waste:

* How can we make less waste at the university?

* How can we dispose of waste in a way that is not bad for nature?
