Central projects
Research Training Group SEAS
SEAS is a Research Training Group financed by Universität Oldenburg. It analyzes the social embeddedness of ACPS and the potential effect of self-explaining ACPS from an interdisciplinary perspective, focusing on the application domains Mobility (autonomous cars), Energy (Smart Grid) and Health Service Research (highly automated Patient Care). We distinguish three analytical dimensions, which we label Acceptance, Cooperation and Governance of ACPS. Along these dimensions, Ph.D projects supervised by two professors each, will focus on how to realize the opportunities pormised by these new technologies in a way that is compatible with the normative and ethical principles of liberal civil societies.

Summary
The digital revolution is in full swing. It opens up opportunities for a better quality of life, novel business models and more efficient management, while at the same time it poses the question of how the digital revolution shall be steered in a way that is consistent with normative and ethical foundations of libertarian civil societies, which are a precondition for modern democratic statehood. The cross-faculty SEAS Research Training Group (RTG) is designed to address this challenge with a focus on the application of Autonomous Cyber Physical Systems (ACPS) in three safety-critical domains (mobility, energy and health care) and three explanatory dimensions (acceptance, cooperation and governance).
ACPS are at the center of the process of digital transformation. They are controlled or monitored by autonomously acting algorithms while being embedded into our daily routines (e.g. autonomous cars, smart grids, e-health assistance systems). Based on two guiding premises, which are the social embeddedness of technological systems and self-explanation as a distinctive feature of future ACPS, the RTG uses an integrative research approach combining insights from social sciences, philosophy, psychology, and law with technical expertise from computer science. The scientific objective of the RTG is to provide transparency to the decision-making of safety critical ACPS in order to foster their individual and societal acceptance across individuals of wildly varying skill levels, ethical predispositions, and cognitive abilities as well as across diverse societal groups, enabling the societal, democratic, and legal control of ACPS.

PIRE Projekt SD-SSCPS
The project Science of Design of Societal-Scale Cyber-Physical Systems is a transatlantic large scale research endeaver funded within the US PIRE programm (Partnership for International Research and Education) by NSF in the US and DFG in Germany. In cooperation with its US partners, the project analyzes the interaction of Humans with societal-scale CPS in the application domains Mobility (Automotive, Avionik) and Energy.

Summary
Together with its American partner proposal, this project aims to develop a new Science of Design for
Societal-Scale Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). Emerging industrial platforms such as the Internet of Things
(IoT), Industrial Internet (II) in the US and Industrie 4.0 in Europe have tremendously accelerated the
development of new generations of CPS that integrate humans and human organizations with physical and
computational processes (H-CPS) and extend to societal-scale systems such as traffic networks, electric
grids, or networks of autonomous systems (self-driving cars, unmanned air vehicles) where control is
dynamically shifted between humans and machines. The introduction of such devices obviously requires a
broader perspective than just technological aspects, as they are bound to induce societal strains about the
impact of new technology trends on how we live. Emerging tensions extend to regulations, certification,
insurance, and other societal constructs that are necessary for the widespread adoption of new technologies.
Societal-scale systems are motivated by societal needs, but must conform to social norms and respond to
expectations. If these systems evolve independently in the US and EU, they will “hard-wire” the social
context in which they are created, making interoperation hard or impossible, decreasing reusability of
results, and narrowing markets for products and services. There are complementary but interrelated
solutions to this challenge: (1) create uniform public policy that is aware of technologies and technology
shifts and enforce alignment of individual preferences with public policy, and (2) develop technologies that
can be adapted or do themselves adapt to varying public policies and individual preferences. The project
proposal focuses on the second approach.
Key ingredients of such an approach are (1) technologies that understand, respect, and exploit human
social interaction with both other humans and machines, (2) model-based techniques for predicting —and
thus also optimizing before deployment— the joint feedback behavior of large-scale H-CPS, (3) means
for monitoring such systems in the field and to rigorously assign causes to misbehavior or suboptimal
behavior, in order to evolve and optimize deployed systems. In the following, we describe the state of the
art w.r.t. these three areas.
IMoST und CSE Projects
Based upon results from the Transregional Collaborative Research Center AVACS, a number of highly succesful projects in the Area of Human-Cyber-Physical Systems have been granted by Lower Saxony's MWK and Volkswagenstiftung since 2007. Within these projects, Researchers of Universität Oldenburg, DLR-TS, OFFIS, and competence network SafeTRANS, being active in Computer Science, Neurocognition, Cognitive Psychology, Health Service Research, Marine Sciences, Phyiscs, Electrical Engineering and Engineering, have analyzed the interplay and cooperation between Humans and technical systems, i.e. highly complex and often safety critical Cyber-Physical Systems. An integral part of this research has been the modeling of Human behavior in so called cognitive Architectures, and amending these models to be applicable by formal analysis and test.

Summary
Transregional Collaborative Research Center 14 AVACS
The DFG funded Transregional Collaborative Research Center ("Sonderforschungsbereich") 14 AVACS addressed the rigorous mathematical verification and analysis of models and realizations of complex safety-critical computerized systems, such as aircraft, trains, cars, or networks formed by these, whose failure can endanger human life. The aim was to raise the state of the art in automatic verification and analysis techniques (V&A) from a level, where it is applicable only to isolated facets of the underlying space of mathematical models, to a level allowing a comprehensive and holistic verification of such systems. These holistic analysis and verification methods have been extended by follow up projects (IMOST and CSE, see above) in a way that allowed human behavior to be included. Essential results of AVACS have been transferred to Industry by means of a successful transfer project.
