Scientists from Oldenburg, Brunswick and Chapel Hill (USA) have isolated a new bacterium from oil-contaminated marine water of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010.

Oldenburg. Scientists from Oldenburg, Brunswick and Chapel Hill (USA) have isolated a new bacterium from oil-contaminated marine water of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010.

In the March issue of the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, the team around leader of the study Dr. Helge-Ansgar Giebel and first author Franziska Klotz was able to show that the newly discovered organism had to be assigned to a new genus. The ability to degrade specific aromatic compounds is one of the outstanding properties of the newly described organism.
