How well does German science look after its young researchers? A panel discussion on 28 October will focus on the doctoral phase - with all its opportunities and risks.
Professors need them, science managers find it harder to climb the career ladder without them and they can also score points in the business world: we are talking about doctorates. Current approaches in the German academic system to promoting young academics in this important phase of qualification will be the focus of a panel discussion with the President of the University, Prof. Dr Dr Hans Michael Piper, on Wednesday, 28 October. The event "Science in academic appointments. Doctorates between research, qualification and career entry" begins at 6 p.m. in the library hall of the University Library (Uhlhornsweg 49-55, Haarentor campus).
The panellists include the Director of the Oldenburg Graduate School of Science and Technology (Oltech), Prof. Dr Georg M. Klump, and Prof. Dr Gisela C. Schulze, Director of the Graduate School of Social Sciences and Humanities (3GO). Dr Antje Wegner from the Institute for Research Information and Quality Assurance e.V. in Berlin will take part. Sonja Staack represents the Higher Education and Research division of the Education and Science Trade Union. Markus Glötzel will take part as a representative of the Mittelbauinitiative Oldenburg. The event will be moderated by Dr Klaudia Hettwer (Oltech) and Rea Kodalle (3GO).
During the discussion, various aspects of the topic of doctoral studies will be examined. What is actually known about the doctoral phase? What conditions should the university offer its doctoral students in terms of supervision and qualification? What problems are there, for example with financing? These and other questions will take centre stage. At the beginning of the event, which both Graduate Schools are organising together with the Graduate Academy, a doctoral scholarship will be awarded. The discussion will be followed by a reception.
