Oldenburg lawyer Prof Dr Jürgen Taeger is expecting participants from five countries at the conference "A Democratic Europe - Memory, Unity and Diversity". It will take place from 7 to 10 May at the University of Oldenburg.
The conference is part of a cycle of four conferences under the motto "Past Memory for a Future Open Society". Further events will take place in Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania.
The conference, which is funded by the European Union, is co-organised by the Federal Institute for Culture and History of Germans in Eastern Europe (BKGE), an affiliated institute of the University of Oldenburg, and the Hanse Law School. The conference, which is deliberately organised to coincide with the official "Europe Day" of the European Union on 9 May, will focus on violations of the law in times of socialist dictatorships and unjust states. Starting from this basis, the participants in Oldenburg will discuss how the memories and experiences from this period can be used to create a democratic Europe that preserves the diversity of cultures and protects the rights of minorities.
At the conference, the experts will address complex topics such as the role of women and the transformation of family life in Hungary during communism or the integration of the Roma into the European Union. The Hanse Law School is participating with lectures on the new European Charter of Fundamental Rights.
