Cooperative Mobile Systems – Wireless Networks vs. Extreme Topology Dynamics

Jun.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christoph Sommer, University of Paderborn

Abstract:

A key use case of modern wireless networks is to connect highly mobile consumer systems – be it via emerging technologies such as those based on 5G NR D2D or via traditional technologies like OCB WLAN. Communicating road vehicles constitute an extreme case of such systems, both in terms of scale and complexity as well as in terms of topology dynamics of the underlying network. Yet, they are considered by many to be the way forward to address tomorrow’s big challenges brought about by urbanization and demographic change. We reflect on the benefits of cooperating road traffic, discuss approaches to performance evaluation, and investigate the numerous challenges that must still be overcome to make this vision a reality.
