Mathematics - Dual-Subject Bachelor's Programme

Within the scope of the Dual-subject Bachelor, you can take Mathematics

  • as a primary or secondary dual subject (60 ECTS credits) or
  • as a Minor (30 ECTS credits) combined with a Major

Mathematics can be studied either in connection with a non-teaching career goal or as a professional teaching qualification. If you want to become a teacher, you must follow the combinations of subjects for each teaching position.

Orientation and Goals

Mathematics is a very old and fascinating science. It is still developing dynamically in the present, permeating many parts of modern industrial society. It offers versatile methods for analysis and understanding, modelling and simulation, forecasting and controlling processes in technology, biological sciences, medicine, economics, and society. Its strengths lie therefore in structural and conceptual clarity, broad applicability, and a lucidity that is achieved through abstraction and deduction. It is no coincidence that mathematics is one of the most important subjects taught in schools and in many non-mathematical fields. The dual-subject bachelor in Mathematics at the University of Oldenburg as one of two subjects has replaced the former 'Lehramt' programmes for the Gymnasium and vocational schools since the winter semester of 2004/2005. As far as possible, it should also qualify graduates for further study and for careers outside of school teaching, depending on the subject combination selected. Students may also study Mathematics within a single-subject bachelor's programme. Combined with a minor subject, this option offers a deeper perspective on mathematics. In the first few semesters, it is easy to switch between the single and dual-subject bachelor's programmes in Mathematics. Students who intend to qualify as teachers for the Grundschule, Hauptschule, and Realschule should register for the dual-subject bachelor's programme Elementary Mathematics. Students who enjoy solving problems and thinking logically, structurally, and geometrically are likely to be successful in this programme. Furthermore, a willingness to overcome difficulties through their own efforts, as well as to communicate with experts in other fields, with laypeople, and especially with instructors would be very helpful.
