Undergraduate research (UR), i.e., student research as a teaching and learning principle, is an innovative and open pedagogy and has become a major consideration among universities around the world. As studies show, UR supports rapid, deep learning in a discipline, reduces dropout rates and fosters inclusion. Therefore, UR is considered a characteristic of high-impact educational practices and of leading European research universities.
Many university teachers are insecure how to include UR in their courses and especially how to support students with their research.
The online course module “Mentoring Digital Undergraduate Research” was designed to develop digital competences and skills among university educators for UR.
It gives an overview about undergraduate research in general and furthermore introduces digital tools to support and manage undergraduate research projects.
It will develop the digital skills and competencies of UR mentors and educators in using technology to support undergraduate researchers. Furthermore, it introduces university teachers involved in UR to the specifics of digital UR and enables them to mentor students in digital UR.
The course will run between 07 August and 10 September and will be held fully online. Except from two mandatory and additional optional web-meetings, all course events are maintained asynchronous. The course has a workload of 2 ECTS and all participants will receive a certificate afterwards.
Participants will learn the aspects of undergraduate research by going through the process themselves. They get to know which tools can support the mentors as well as the students.
Participants from all project partners are welcome to join.
Up to 15 University-teachers can participate free of charge. In case all participants are fluent in German, the course can be conducted in German. The used materials are in English.
