The Department of Medical Physics and Acoustics was formed January 1st, 2013, when the research groups participating in the Cluster of Excellence Hearing4all were moved into the new School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Since April 2023, the director of the department is Prof. Dr. Volker Hohmann.
