Habilitation and rehabilitation

Habilitation

The habilitation serves as proof of outstanding competence in independent scientific research and qualified independent teaching in a specific scientific subject or subject area (teaching qualification). With the habilitation, the habilitated person is granted the authority to teach independently at the University of Oldenburg for a specific scientific subject or subject area (authorisation to teach).

The procedure as well as the necessary requirements are regulated by the university-wide habilitation regulations. For School VI Medicine and Health Sciences, additional subject-specific regulations apply, which are regulated in Annex 1 of the Regulations.

Habilitation services

Written habilitation performance

The requirements for the written habilitation performance are regulated in § 5 of the Habilitation Regulations. Please note that the required number of publications must be provided by peer-reviewed original works, but not by editorials, case reports, opinion papers, narrative reviews, etc. If there is any uncertainty about the evaluation of a work, it can be checked as part of a preliminary inquiry.

Oral habilitation performance

The oral habilitation performance consists of two parts, namely a scientific lecture open to the public at the university and a subsequent colloquium open to the public at the university (§ 5 of the Habilitation Regulations).

  • The academic presentation open to the public at the university has a duration of 45 minutes and relates to the subject area for which the habilitation is being sought. The habilitation candidate proposes three possible topics to the habilitation committee in advance, which together demonstrate a sufficiently broad knowledge of the subject area. The commission selects the topic and informs the habilitation candidate accordingly. (cf. § 11 Habilitation Regulations). The lecture should have a scientific character and show the didactic skills of the habilitator.
  • The lecture is directly followed by a colloquium open to the public for a maximum of 60 minutes for scientific discussion of the lecture.

Please note that in justified exceptional cases, the habilitation committee may decide, with the consent of the habilitation candidate, to hold the public lecture and the subsequent public colloquium electronically. As a rule, the electronic proceedings are then conducted using the BigBlueButton programme.

Conclusion of the habilitation procedure

The chairperson of the habilitation committee reports to the dean and the president on the completed habilitation procedure. The Dean reports to the Faculty Council on the conclusion of the procedure. With the handing over of the habilitation certificate, the habilitation is completed and the authorisation to teach independently at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg in the subject or subject area of the habilitation is granted (authorisation to teach).

According to § 15 of the Habilitation Regulations, the written habilitation thesis shall be published in full or in substantial excerpts by the habilitator after completion of the procedure, unless it has already been published. In addition, the habilitation candidate must make a copy of the written habilitation thesis or of the publication available to the library and information system of the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg within one year of the conclusion of the procedure, with reference to the completed habilitation procedure:
