Habilitation and Rehabilitation
Habilitation and Rehabilitation
The habilitation serves as proof of outstanding aptitude for independent academic research and qualified independent teaching in a specific academic subject or subject area (teaching qualification). With the habilitation, the habilitated person is authorized to teach independently at the University of Oldenburg in a specific academic subject or subject area (teaching authorization). The Privatdozentin or Privatdozent is obliged to carry out free-of-charge titular teaching within his or her subject area to the extent of two teaching hours per academic year.
The procedure and the necessary requirements are regulated by the university-wide habilitation regulations. For Faculty VI Medicine and Health Sciences, additional subject-specific provisions apply, which are regulated in Annex 1 of the regulations.

Written habilitation thesis
The requirements for the written habilitation thesis are regulated in § 5 of the habilitation regulations.
Please note that the required number of publications must be peer-reviewed original works, but not editorials, case reports, opinion papers, narrative reviews, etc. If there are any uncertainties regarding the assessment of a thesis, this can be checked as part of a preliminary inquiry.
Oral habilitation performance
The oral habilitation performance consists of two parts, namely an academic presentation open to the university and a subsequent colloquium open to the university (Section 5 of the habilitation regulations).
- The public academic presentation lasts 30 minutes and relates to the subject area for which the habilitation is sought. The habilitation candidate proposes three possible topics to the habilitation committee in advance, which together demonstrate a sufficiently broad knowledge of the subject area. The committee selects the topic and informs the habilitation candidate accordingly. (cf. § 11 habilitation regulations). The lecture should have a scientific character and demonstrate the habilitation candidate's didactic skills.
- The lecture is directly followed by a colloquium lasting a maximum of 30 minutes, which is open to the university public, for academic discussion of the lecture.
Please note that in justified exceptional cases, the habilitation committee may decide, with the consent of the habilitation candidate, to hold the public university lecture and the subsequent public university colloquium electronically. As a rule, the electronic implementation then takes place via the BigBlueButton program.
Completion of the habilitation procedure
The Chair of the Habilitation Committee reports to the Dean and the President on the completion of the habilitation procedure. The Dean reports to the Faculty Council on the completion of the procedure. When the habilitation certificate is issued, the habilitation is completed and the authorization to teach independently at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg in the subject or subject area of the habilitation is granted (authorization to teach). The Privatdozentin or Privatdozent is obliged to carry out free-of-charge title teaching within his or her subject area to the extent of two teaching hours per academic year. Proof of the title teaching provided must be submitted to the Dean of Studies' Office without being asked(studekems@uol.de).
In accordance with § 15 of the habilitation regulations, the habilitation candidate must publish the written habilitation thesis in full or in substantial excerpts after completion of the procedure if it has not already been published. In addition, the habilitation candidate must make a copy of the written habilitation thesis or the publication available to the library and information system of the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg within one year of completion of the procedure, with reference to the completed habilitation procedure:
In the event of difficulties in connection with the habilitation as well as questions regarding correct academic conduct, it is generally possible to contact the ombudsperson responsible for the faculty. Confidential treatment of the inquiry is of course guaranteed.
Persons who have been habilitated at another academic university can be granted a teaching license at the University of Oldenburg (re-habilitation). The same principles and requirements apply for re-habilitation as for habilitation.
If you are interested in re-habilitation, please contact the office in good time. We will be happy to advise you and assist you with the formalities of the rehabilitation procedure.
Application for admission and documents
The application for re-habilitation must be accompanied by the same documents as the habilitation application (Checklist Application for (Re-)Habilitation) and additionally
- certified copy of the habilitation certificate and the venia legendi certificate,
- Declaration of consent to obtain the written reports from the original habilitation procedure from the previous home faculty,
