With former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as keynote speaker, the University of Oldenburg and the University Society opened the academic year for the first time in a joint event on 19 October. In his lecture on "Political Challenges and Perspectives for Europe", Schröder spoke to an audience of around 800 people. He emphasised his closeness to the university. When he became Prime Minister in 1990, one of his first official acts was to make it possible for the university to be named after Carl von Ossietzky. Prior to Schröder's speech, UGO Chair Prof Dr Werner Brinker awarded the "Prize for Excellent Research 2017" to sociologist Prof Dr Jannika Mattes and to physicist Dr Sebastian Wilken for his outstanding doctorate.
