"On a cabbage tour with Charles Darwin" is the title of the next short lecture in the "Uni am Markt" series on Saturday, 13 October at 11.00 a.m. in the Exerzierhalle at Pferdemarkt.
The speaker is Prof Dr Dirk Albach, university lecturer for "Biodiversity and Evolution of Plants" and Head of the Botanical Garden at the University of Oldenburg. The event is organised by the University's Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L) and the Oldenburg State Theatre. Admission is free.
Anyone who eats Oldenburg kale today is unlikely to realise that cabbage is the result of centuries of cultivation. The changes to wild cabbage that led to kale, as well as many other types of cabbage - from broccoli to Brussels sprouts - are good examples of the most important principles of evolution. They also played an important role in Charles Darwin's formulation of the theory of evolution. Albach presents the basics of this theory using the example of kale. He explains what is known today about the origin of cabbage varieties, but also what evolutionary biology is researching today.
