Team

The co-operation between the University of Oldenburg and Nelson Mandela University in South Africa (then the University of Port Elizabeth) was founded in the mid-1990s by the educationalists Prof. Dr Wolfgang Nitsch, Prof. Dr Gottfried Mergner and Prof. Dr Claudia Lohrenscheit, who were involved in the anti-apartheid solidarity movement. Until his death (2016), Wolfgang Nitsch continued the partnership substantially and with ever new initiatives and visions and initiated the expansion of the co-operation to many other disciplines and departments at the University of Oldenburg. He was succeeded by Karsten Speck, who has also been the official ambassador of the University of Oldenburg for the partnership with Nelson Mandela University since 2019(more on the history and the strategic partnership can be found here). The partnerships with the University of Dar es Salaam (since 2008), Moi University and the Uganda Management Institute (since 2014) were integrated based on their expertise and needs, and the South-South component is now a permanent feature of the co-operation.
